Fira

Fira is the enchanting capital of the island and the biggest and most cosmopolitan settlement of Santorini. Furthermore, it merges natural attractiveness, social vitality, nightlife, and shopping. It is the most happening place on the island. But, the premier thing that makes it spectacular is the Caldera view that will leave you speechless. A walk to the scenic alleys during the daytime will fill you with harmony, while at night, you can find yourself in the middle of a major party. There are also numerous restaurants, bars, and clubs where you can relax, get high on the fantastic view, dance, or have fun.

Oia

Oia, also known as Pano Meria, is a village of unparalleled beauty. Consequently, it is the most visited area for sunset viewing, probably the most famous sunset in the world.

Furthermore, the village is a mixture of white-blue houses and churches, with pink and ocher details “hanging” on the caldera, forming a multicolor canvas that is difficult to grasp. It is a relatively tranquil village that comes alive during sunset.

Imerovigli

The village, also known as “The Balcony to the Aegean,” is built on the highest point of the caldera cliffs, about 300 meters above sea level. Its position delivers a superb sight of the volcano, the sparkling Aegean Sea, and the sunset. It lies 3 kilometers from the capital of Fira. Not much, therefore we recommend going on hiking there.

Tip: We recommend visiting Theoskepasti Chapel and admiring sunset views from there.

Firostefani

Although the village is considered a separate settlement, it is part of Fira, the capital of Santorini. The name “Firostefani” (Fira + Stefani, meaning crown in Greek) derives from its position on the highest part of the Fira. Its superb location makes it an excellent site for enjoying the finest views of the caldera.

Pyrgos

What makes Pyrgos unique is that it is the highest village on the whole island, providing great panoramic views of both sides. It is on the west coast, about 8 kilometers southeast of Fira.

Thanks to its privileged position, it stands out from a distance, and the sight from up there offers a different point of view you can only admire from Pyrgos. More importantly (for us at least) is that the village remains traditional and slightly undeveloped with narrow, winding paths and stone houses, which makes it even more adorable.

Akrotiri

Akrotiri is a quiet village, not as popular and developed, but of great interest and importance. Akrotiri means cape, and it is an actual peninsula. It is situated on the southwest edge of Santorini, about 15 kilometers from Fira, offering exquisite island views. It is famous for its lighthouse, where you can enjoy majestic sunsets.

Additionally, you can find two marvelous beaches here. The first one is the famous Red Beach. The second is a small, charming beach White Beach, encircled with high, white rocks and covered pebbles. Neither of them is easily accessible, but that adds to their appeal. The scenery will positively fill you with awe.

Here you can also find some historical treasures. One of them is the archaeological site of Akrotiri, a significant prehistoric Aegean town worth visiting. You can walk through it and observe frescoes, relics, furniture, advanced drainage systems, and even multi-story buildings from the Bronze Age.

Emporio

Did you know that Emporio is the largest village in Santorini? It is built in the lowlands, at the foot of Profitis Ilias Mountain.

The village profited from its vicinity to Perissa and its cosmopolitan volcanic beaches. It is still a peaceful settlement, though, with lovely houses and yards, making the place very inviting. Furthermore, you can find many shops, cafes, bars, and traditional taverns with savory dishes and fine wines. The big attraction of Emporio is the medieval Kasteli, one of the five fortified castles of Santorini. Inside the castle is a church dating back to the 16th century or earlier. In the close distance lies the Tower of Nimborio (The “Goulas”), a square building used as a watchtower and refuge.
