This Alluring Oia village on Santorini will guide you on what to do, what to see, and how to explore this unique Santorini village, renowned for its beautiful sunsets.
Stunning Oia is carved out of Santorini’s cliffs—a panorama of white buildings dotted with colorful rooftops typical of the country—set against the deep blue sea. It is the place to spend the day on a boat or a chaise lounge taking in the sun, then enjoying long meals and strolls through town. There are also pretty churches, making for a relaxing afternoon outing. Sunsets in Oia are legendary. Watch from a café or, better yet, from a boat—you’ll be spellbound.
Oia pronounced Ia, is the most visited village in Santorini and the second largest after Fira, the island’s capital town.
Oia is undoubtedly the most picturesque village in Santorini -and some may claim it is the prettiest one in Greece! It has become famous worldwide for its authentic Cycladic beauty, whitewashed houses, labyrinth-like alleys, and excellent hotels, although the top thing Oia is known for is its magical sunset. Hundreds of people gather every evening to watch the sun setting above the Aegean Sea and capture the most beautiful sunset in Greece.
Oia is a small village. Therefore, the best way to discover it is by foot. But you won’t probably stay in the town when you get there. So, you will want to explore the whole island. That’s why we invite you to read our related article about the Top things to do and see in Santorini.
Most hotels are just off the main pedestrian path connecting Oia’s prime areas.
Most luxury hotels in Oia look south into the caldera and have great views of the volcano and Santorini cliffs. But these hotels do not have sunset views. Only the hotels on the western end of the town can see the sunset into the water. Therefore, these have only partial caldera views.

The buses that depart from there take visitors to the central bus station in Fira village, which is 5 km away. There is a bus from Santorini airport to Fira approximately every hour. So when you arrive in Santorini, you will want to see the town. That’s 99% certain. Those on a budget will most likely stay in Kamara or Perissa. However, we strongly recommend visiting the island off the season (in May). Prices are namely lower then. And more importantly, there are fewer crowds. Remember, photos are the best in spring because the air is more transparent.
