Getting around the Amalfi Coast

In this article, Getting around the Amalfi Coast, we will reveal the best and most economical ways of moving around this incredible coast.

We suppose you have already read our article about How to get to the Amalfi Coast. And have also read other guides about it. So, we gather we should get right to the point.

Getting around the Amalfi Coast

Getting Around by Car

The “Amalfi Drive” has just one lane in each direction and is often very busy. Regarding the traffic and the endless curves, we recommend maximum caution behind the wheel.

Avoid driving in peak hours, particularly in the summer, when traffic is heavy (weekends in a peak season from May to October). Another disadvantage on the Amalfi Coast is the need for sufficient parking space.

The towns are steep. So, finding parking spaces in such small, vertical villages can be a painful task.

Though the towns all have some public and private car parks, parking can cost as much as €10 an hour.

There is only free parking on the Amalfi Coast if you can park far from any village. In Amalfi, the main Luna Rossa parking lot is along the coastal road just south of the center of Amalfi. In Positano, you must leave your car in one of the public parking lots near the pedestrian-only areas of the village center, as street parking is resident-only.

Note: Remember also that the historic centers of Positano and the other towns on the Amalfi Coast are closed to traffic, especially in the summer months.

Getting around by scooter

A scooter is by far the most pleasurable means of getting around the Amalfi Coast, allowing travelers to explore the area without worrying about getting stuck in traffic or where to park.

You can rent mopeds in most of the towns on the Amalfi Coast.

More importantly, we only recommend you use a motorcycle to get around if you already have considerable experience and are confident about navigating the many kilometers of demanding curves.

Getting Around by Public Transport

Buses operated by the Sita bus company run between all towns on the Amalfi Coast. Although frequent, the traffic volume on the routes prevents them from arriving on time.

Important: Be prepared for the crowds! In the summer, you might never find a seat on buses filled with local holidaymakers heading to the sea.

Note: If you travel by Sita bus, you must buy your tickets before boarding. You cannot buy them on board. You can purchase them in most bars and tobacconists on the Amalfi Coast.

Be aware that buses do not run at night, and if you want to get from one town to another in the evening and do not have your vehicle, you will have to take a taxi.
