About Mamma Mia
The 2008 film *Mamma Mia!* is a popular musical comedy that features songs by the Swedish group ABBA. The story takes place on the Greek island of Kalokairi, where 20-year-old Sophie Sheridan is getting ready for her wedding. She dreams of having her father walk her down the aisle, but she does not know who he is.
While reading her mother Donna’s diary, Sophie finds out that she has three possible fathers: Sam Carmichael, Bill Anderson, and Harry Bright.
Sophie invites all three men to the island without telling them. They arrive at the same time, surprising Donna. As the wedding day gets closer, Sophie spends time with each man to find out who her birth father is. Meanwhile, Donna reunites with her old bandmates, the “Dynamos.” This creates funny musical moments and emotional scenes.
Mamma Mia locations on Skiathos
Skopelos was the primary filming location for the beaches and the famous chapel in Mamma Mia!. Skiathos was used for the important town and port scenes that helped tell the story.
The main Mamma Mia! filming spots on Skiathos are all in or very close to Skiathos Town.
The Old Port of Skiathos
This is the most famous place on Skiathos. This is where Sophie’s three possible fathers—Sam, Harry, and Bill—meet for the first time. Sam and Harry race through the streets and along the waterfront, trying to catch the ferry to the fictional island of Kalokairi (Skopelos), but they miss it.
They eventually meet Bill at the port, who offers them a ride on his sailboat. The port is shaped like a horseshoe, with the pretty Bourtzi peninsula dividing the harbor and a lively waterfront filled with cafes and tavernas.
The Church of Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas) Bell Tower
This location is essential in the opening song, “I Have a Dream.” The film shows a broader view of the town’s rooftops and the well-known bell tower of the Church of Agios Nikolaos while Sophie posts her three wedding invitations. The clock tower offers a great view of Skiathos Town and the harbor.
Skiathos is where the story starts and acts as a lively entrance to the fictional island of Kalokairi. Many tours that focus on the movie begin or include cruises from Skiathos before heading to the main filming spots on Skopelos.

Agios Ioannis Kastri (The Wedding Chapel)
The small cliff-top chapel is where Sophie and Sky are set to marry, and where Donna and Sam got married. It is also the location for the song “The Winner Takes It All.” The chapel sits on a large rock about 100 meters high in the northern part of the island, near Glossa village. To reach the top, you need to climb about 200 steps carved into the rock.
Note: The interior of the church for the wedding scene was a temporary set built in Pinewood Studios, not the actual tiny interior of the chapel.
Kastani Beach
Kastani Beach, located on the west coast of Skopelos Island, is renowned for its stunning white sand and pine trees. This beautiful beach served as the backdrop for several significant musical numbers in the movie “Mamma Mia!”, including:
– “Lay All Your Love on Me” (performed by Sophie and Sky)
– “Does Your Mother Know” (performed by Tanya)
It was also the location of the poignant final goodbye scene between Sophie and her three fathers.
Kastani Beach is a picturesque bay that features fine white and golden sand, small pebbles, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. It is surrounded by a lush pine forest that reaches right down to the shore. The wooden pier and bar seen in the film were temporary sets and have since been removed.
As one of the most famous and beautiful beaches on Skopelos Island, Kastani Beach is a must-visit site for fans of the movie. It is included in nearly every “Mamma Mia!” tour offered on Skopelos and for those arriving from Skiathos.

Glysteri Beach / Nisi Area
Glysteri Beach is a famous and beautiful beach on the island of Skopelos. It is well-known for its clear waters and was featured in the movie Mamma Mia! Glysteri Beach is in a sheltered cove on the northern side of Skopelos, about 4 km from Skopelos Town (Chora).
The rocky area above this beach served as the fictional location of Villa Donna. The arched stone entrance to Villa Donna was a temporary set built on a cliff above the beach. The olive groves above the beach were used in scenes such as Sophie riding a donkey to her wedding. This is also where Donna picks up Rosie and Tanya in the jeep.
Cape Amorontas and Agnontas Port
Agnontas port is a charming fishing harbor in Agnontas. It is said to have inspired the fantasy background for the song “Money, Money, Money.”
Cape Amarandos is one of the most beautiful places on Skopelos Island, known from the movie Mamma Mia! It features a scenic coastline with rugged beauty rather than a single beach. Near Agnontas, it has dramatic rock formations and two pine trees that grow from a small peninsula jutting into the sea. Cape Amarandos is easily recognized by its small, rocky peninsula with two (sometimes referred to as three) mature pine trees that curve over the white limestone and clear turquoise waters.
In the movie, the sailing scenes for “Our Last Summer” were filmed around the rocky coves and sparkling waters of Cape Amarandos. The scene where Sophie and her three possible fathers jump into the water from the rocks also takes place here. The area is also where Sophie runs through the trees, reading her mother’s diary and singing “Honey, Honey.”
How to visit Mamma Mia locations?
Visiting the Mamma Mia! filming locations on Skiathos and Skopelos is a fun adventure. Skopelos was the leading filming site, while Skiathos serves as the easy entry point for a few key scenes.
Most of the Mamma Mia! scenes in Skiathos are in Skiathos Town, which you can visit on your own in about an hour. Skiathos is the only island in the Sporades with an airport, making it easy to take a ferry to Skopelos for a day trip. Mamma Mia! tours are popular in July and August, so it’s a good idea to book in advance to secure your spot. Local kiosks at the port often offer lower prices or cash discounts for last-minute bookings.
Keep in mind that tours may be canceled or changed on windy days.
