This pristine destination, steeped in legend, is said to have held Odysseus spellbound for seven years, making it an ideal escape for those seeking tranquility and inspiration.
At the heart of Mljet lies the stunning Mljet National Park, which encompasses serene saltwater lakes—Veliko and Malo Jezero—a historic Benedictine monastery on the picturesque Isle of Saint Mary, and Polače, recognized as the finest natural harbor in the entire Adriatic.

The island’s southern shore is home to the remarkable Odysseus Cave. In this place, the legendary hero found refuge after his shipwreck. Immerse yourself in the magic of Mljet and its rich heritage.
How to get to Mljet Island?
If you arrive at Dubrovnik Airport, you can expect a short journey of about 20 minutes from the terminal to the catamaran departure point. You should purchase your ticket at the port at least 30 minutes before departure.
For those landing at Split Airport, a shuttle bus connects passengers directly to the Split ferry port, taking approximately 30 minutes. However, due to increased traffic, travel times may vary during summer.
Mljet Island and its National Park can be easily reached by ferry from various locations along the Adriatic coast, including:
- Dubrovnik to Mljet catamaran line
- Prapratno (Pelješac Peninsula) to Mljet ferry
- Split-Brač-Hvar–Korčula-Mljet-Dubrovnik catamaran line
Additionally, visitors arriving by boat are permitted to anchor and berth in designated areas within Mljet National Park. The park’s official website provides more detailed information.
Transportation in Mljet
Exploring Mljet Island is made easy with a variety of transport options. For short distances, renting a bicycle is a popular choice. The island also has a reliable bus service, with two lines covering the west and east sides. For a more personal experience, consider renting a scooter or car to explore remote beaches and charming villages at your own pace. You can find bike and scooter rentals near the National Park.

Where to Stay on Mljet?
Mljet is the perfect island for a romantic and rustic getaway. However, the only hotel on the island is Hotel Odisej, located in Pomona. Yet, several private accommodation options are available, primarily in Pomena and Polače. While there are various places to stay on Mljet Island, we recommend accommodations in Pomena, Polače, or Goveđari, as they are conveniently close to the National Park and local bars and restaurants. Additionally, there are three camping sites available on the island. We usually book our accommodation on Booking.com.
How many days should you stay on the island?
Although many people visit Mljet just for the day, by heading straight to the National Park, we advise staying here for at least 2-3 nights since there is so much beauty to explore.
About Mljet National Park
Being surrounded by pristine nature is a true privilege. Mljet National Park, the oldest marine park in Croatia, is a verdant sanctuary in the northwest part of the island. Here, lush forests and the turquoise waters of the Great and Small Lakes (Croatian: Veliko and Malo Jezero) form an idyllic retreat. Unwind in the shade of the Benedictine monastery on the island of St. Mary, explore the cycling and hiking paths, or immerse yourself in the beauty of the beaches. The greenest island of the Adriatic has long captivated the heart of the ancient hero Odysseus, and it promises to cast a spell on you as well.
With over 90 percent of its area covered in lush woodlands, Mljet National Park offers a mesmerizing view of two turquoise gems—the Great and Small Lakes.
