Our TOP LGBTQ movies

Our TOP LGBTQ movies

First, we would like to share what this Our TOP LGBTQ movies article is about.

Namely, while browsing the web, we came across numerous TOP LGBTQ charts. This is why we decided to show you our own. But this is not based on the opinion of the world-renowned cinema critic, but on ours. Therefore, at the end of the article, we invite you to have a little discussion. We would namely love to see your personal TOP LGBTQ movie chart.

Short introduction on Our TOP LGBTQ movies

Let’s be honest: LGBTQ+ representation in movies hasn’t always been exactly at the same level For such a long time, good queer cinema was practically nonexistent or played in tired and tokenizing tropes. Even with this in mind, most mainstream cinema has focused on heteronormative scenarios since decades.

However, where such criticism once came from an almost barren cannon, LGBTQ cinema has evolved enough to support some award-winning prestige films. The beauty of LGBTQ representation in film is that, just like its community members, there is no “one-size-fits-all” story. This means it’s not just about LGBTQ trauma anymore. More importantly, comedies, exciting dramas, adventures, and a few documentaries exist. Here are our TOP picks:

Our TOP pics

Brokeback Mountain 2005

We love this movie, not just for the score, cinematography, and performances; to me, it’s a timeless tale. It’s more than sex and religion; it’s two people fighting their demons in a world full of prejudice. Both are so stubborn and repressed, choosing not to turn to light.

They were forced to choose love in the end because, after all, its the highest currency, and we all need it for survival. But desire is desire. You can fight what you do but not what you want.

It was also the very first LGBT movie we’ve seen.

Moonlight 2016

So much more than a movie about growing up gay; it’s about overcoming your adversities and figuring out who you want to become despite being a product of your environment. The editing is brilliant, and the soundtrack includes classical and hip-hop music that fits perfectly. The camera captured the people and emotions like I was standing next to them. It affected us on a deeper level how identity can take so long to discover, which we think anyone can relate to.

Handmaiden 2016

First of all, the filming itself is rich. Secondly, the story is entirely gorgeous at the same time. The director managed to make us feel a whole spectrum of emotions. Despite that, we still couldn’t stop watching; that’s how good it was. Intentionally? We’re sure! Korean movies never coddle their audience with what it’s shown regarding sexuality. Namely, the two leading women of the film, the handmaiden and her master/mistress, end up having an emotional connection, leading to a sexual one. We’d recommend this one for the visuals alone.

Gods own Country 2017

It does in some way compared to Brokeback Mountain, but we think the latter only helped shape this. Two completely different men with different beliefs end up working together on a farm.

A visceral war starts immediately between them in every area of their lives: physical, emotional, psychological, and sexual. Of course, the storytelling is unbridled. Regardless of who or what you are, this film will stir up emotions you had forgotten you even had. It is indescribable and can only be experienced by watching the movie… We highly recommend this rare and unique film.
