In this short guide to Rome for first-timers, we will give you a few pieces of advice on what to see, what to do, and how to do it when visiting this magnificent city for the first time. Furthermore, we will also post a short video with handy tips to make your journey safer and better.
Rome’s top attractions
First on the list are Rome’s major attraction, which has been drawing travelers to the city for centuries. So which are they? It is a difficult task. We have to admit. However, here comes good news and our second tip. You can all visit them on the metro. Rome’s metro has stops and every major tourist attraction, like Colosseum, Spanish Steps, and the Vatican.

Rome for the first-timers – tips and tricks
- Decide how many days to stay. We advise you to stay for at least four days and more. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day, so it can’t be seen in a day, either.
- Find the most valuable accommodation.
The cheapest isn’t always the best. So remember that more affordable rooms are most likely to be on the city’s outskirts. Therefore, you will spend much time and money going to the center, where most of its major attractions are. Ultimately, we recommend choosing a room as near the center as possible. Click here if you want to find some valuable Rome deals. - Avoid the TOP season. There are some months, in particular, to be avoided, like August or the time of the 1st May vacation. However, the season lasts almost the whole year.
- Use Rome’s metro
We found it much more comfortable riding with the Metropolitana. Firstly because it is cheap and secondly because it is frequent; however, be aware of the pickpockets! - Bring comfortable shoes.
There will most likely be a lot of walking. - Skip the waiting lines and preorder some tickets online.
- Have a crossbody bag.
- Follow the latest COVID regulations and restrictions.
- Always have an ID with you.
- Learn a few Italian phrases.
- Try to get lost in the maze of the city’s alleys.
- Have a coffee at a bar!
Who hasn’t heard of cappuccino, latte macchiato, or espresso? Well, they were all born in Italy. So why not drink from the best? - Try some Roman dishes. The most famous ones are Cacio e Pepe, Saltimbocca, and, of course, Carbonara. If you wish to learn more, read our article by clicking here.
- Flip a coin into the Fontana di trevi.
- Make love in Rome if you are single. There’s nothing better you can do in a city of love.
Coronavirus Update: Please note that some venues may be closed in line with local government advice. Stay safe and follow the local authority’s guidance to minimize the risk of virus transmission. Please check the venue’s website for the latest opening hours and information before making your journey. Ultimately, you can check the Skyscanner site for the latest COVID-19 travel updates and restrictions
