Which are the most stunning Algarve beaches?

Praia da Marinha
Firstly, it is the must-see beach in the Algarve and is widely considered one of the most beautiful in the world. So naturally, Praia da Marinha is a genuine spectacle of fascinating rock shapes. It’s also a famous backdrop for advertisements, and the shape of a heart formed by the rocks is often featured on postcards and tourism brochures. However, there is little space for sunbathing when the tide rises. Still, most people take photos in the turquoise water and explore the rock formations. It’s even more impressive from above, following a trail over the cliffs. Named “Seven Hanging Valleys,” the trail offers indeed spectacular panoramas. Additionally, it continues to other beaches to the west, including Praia de Benagil, where you can hop on a boat and visit the famous cave. Even if you don’t go to Benagil, the trail is an experience no nature lover or hiker should miss.
Prainha
It has everything that makes the beaches of the Algarve unique — a series of coves and caves separated and surrounded by towering rock formations on the sand and in the water. However, it remains a secret. Most people find it on a walk from the more popular beach of Três Irmãos to the west (see below). It’s one of the Algarve’s most romantic, and no one should leave without heading up the cliff behind it for the panoramic view. It was our favorite beach, unexpectedly.
Praia de Benagil
Firstly, this beach has become one of the Algarve’s most popular thanks to its prominent cave. However, the hidden cave can only be reached by boat; most tours depart here. Social media brought the crowds, so it’s not a beach for peace, but you’ll enjoy the views of the boats as you relax before or after a visit to the cave. You can follow a walking trail from the clifftop to Algarve’s #1 beach (Praia da Marinha; see above) to the east.
Praia de São Rafael
It’s one of the Algarve’s most iconic, with its characteristic scenery of ochre cliffs, rocks, and soft golden sand. Furthermore, there are caverns to explore on kayaks or paddle boards or, when the tides allow it, on foot. Ultimately, it’s worth staying for the sunset views from the top of the cliff. Some excellent hotels are just a short walk away.
Praia dos Pescadores
Praia dos Pescadores, also known as Fisherman’s Beach, is the place to be in May. This shimmering sand on the edge of Albufeira is a hub of activity, with sun-soaked bodies, sandcastle builders, and swimmers throughout summer.
One of the main draws is the proximity to the town. You only need to walk a few roads behind to be inundated with eateries and bars, from sushi joints to tile-fronted tavernas that ooze Iberian charm. Praia dos Pescadores also offers convenient amenities like showers and sunbeds for rent.
Praia do Camilo
The picture-perfect view from the top of the wooden staircase that leads down to it has made this one of the Algarve’s most famous beaches. Lagos is known for its breathtaking coast; you can see it in its most beautiful surroundings. Golden rock formations and cliffs surround the beach with crystal-clear water, inviting snorkelers. Unfortunately, it lacks space to accommodate the many visitors, so you will have little peace. Still, the scenic beauty makes up for it. It’s divided into two parts, separated by a cliff but connected by a tunnel, so it’s bigger than it looks when you arrive.

Praia da Falésia
This “Grand Canyon by the Sea” is one of the Algarve’s longest beaches. The red and ochre cliffs behind it rise to as much as 40 meters (130ft), and the magnificent scenery has placed it on lists of the world’s best beaches. Visitors should admire it from the top of the pine-covered cliffs. Some fantastic hotels are within walking distance, so they might even make it their base to explore the region.
Praia da Dona Ana
Due to social media, Praia do Camilo has taken some of the spotlight away from this beautiful beach. For years, it was where everyone wanted to go in Lagos. It’s still trendy, and international publications consider it one of Portugal’s best beaches. The cliffs and rock formations protect it from the winds, and there are stunning views from the top from both the northern and southern ends.
Praia da Rocha, Portimao
Firstly, this one-kilometer-long beach is a hub in the Algarve, with many wide walkways allowing easy access. Here, you will find surfing schools doing their thing in the shallows, basketball hoops on the beach, and crowds of young people who come to chill out. Dominating the skyline is the fortress of Santa Catarina. The marina is well served, with restaurants and bars by the beach.
Ilha de Tavira
The most popular of the Algarve’s six islands has four beaches. When you take the ferry from Tavira, you arrive at the beach on the eastern end, Praia da Ilha de Tavira or Praia de Tavira. To reach the sand from the pier, you must cross pinewoods and see a campsite and restaurants, the only structures on the island. It can get crowded by the restaurants, where parasols and sunbeds are for rent, but as you walk to the right, it becomes nearly deserted. It offers so much space that many people sunbathe nude.
Praia dos Três Irmãos
The Praia dos Três Irmãos, also known as Praia de Alvor Nascente, gets its name from three rock formations on its eastern side. This area has tall rocks and cliffs, while the western side has a kilometer of dunes with loungers and sunshades for a quieter atmosphere. A cliff separates the beach from Prainha, which many visitors reach by climbing over the rocks. Prainha is also accessible by stairs or an elevator. It’s a great idea to explore Prainha when visiting. To find the best spot in summer, arrive in the morning. If you choose the eastern side, avoid sitting too close to the cliff because of the risk of rockfall. Bring your umbrella or rent a parasol for shade.
