Ptuj

Maribor is close to Ptuj, the oldest Slovenian city. The Drava River connects the towns, and the world’s oldest vine thrives in the famous Ptuj castle. Furthermore, the renowned carnival (kurentovanje) is included in the UNESCO list.

The Upper Slovenske Gorice wine-tourist road meanders through the picturesque wine-growing hills parallel to the Austrian border. An Arthurian castle in Slovenia: Castle Borl

Borl Castle is an impressive medieval fortress built on a rocky cliff above the Drava River. After years of neglect, the castle is undergoing a significant restoration project. It is expected to reopen to the public in 2022. The castle features two courtyards, a Z-shaped two-story cellar, and many grand halls. The Borl Castle Natura 2000 Interpretation and Information Centre will be located in the castle to showcase the Drava Natura 2000 area.

Located 20 kilometers from the castle, on a headland overlooking the Drava River, stands a mighty fortress named Borl or Ankenstein in German. Wolfram von Eschenbach’s story states that its heraldic crest is an inverted anchor, symbolizing Parzifal’s Grail family.

Bogojina Church of the Ascension

The Church of the Ascension by Jože Plečnik is the most famous shrine of Pomurje in the Podravska wine region. Locally referred to as the white dove, the incredible white architecture holds a dove in the uppermost tower. Built during the 1920s decade, this is a masterpiece of the famous architect Plečnik. When visiting here, expect a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by serenity and contemplation.

Ljubljana

Ljubljana is a small European capital with a population of just 292,000 and is most certainly one of the top day trips from Maribor. Thanks to its recently pedestrianized center and fleet of free electric jeeps, it’s a modern city. The city’s elegant layout is shaped by architect Jože Plečnik’s designs, including landmarks like the Triple Bridge and Križanke Summer Theatre. Ljubljana has excellent restaurants, fascinating museums, and a vibrant nightlife scene, thanks to its large student population. It’s a destination with endless appeal, which is still affordable and crowd-free.

Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and has a population of around 800,000. Historically, two towns, Gradec and Kaptol, merged into one city in the 19th century. Furthermore, Zagreb has a pleasant climate, with temperatures rising to 30 degrees in summer and winter being cold with snow and rain. The city is bustling with events and activities, and cafes are always full. Saturdays are exceptional, with citizens dressing up and going to the market. Sundays are for walking and hiking. Graz is Austria’s second-largest city, a laid-back place surrounded by farmlands and vineyards. It’s free from Starbucks and dominated by sustainable stores, zero-waste restaurants, and farmers’ markets. While the historic Old Town is famous, Graz has much more to offer, including a large student population, strong community and sustainability focus, and plenty of green space.
