Short Introduction On Oscar Wilde
We are almost sure that almost everybody knows Oscar Wilde. He has been immensely popular for more than a century.
Anyhow, let’s spend a few words about him.
He was an Irish playwright, poet, and author of numerous short stories and one novel. He is known for his harsh wit and an abundance of aphorisms. He became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. His plays continue to be widely performed, especially The Importance of Being Earnest. His other most notable works are the tragedy Salome and especially his only gothic novel, Picture of Dorian Gray.
As the result of a widely covered series of trials, Wilde suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years of hard labor after being convicted of “gross indecency” with other men. After being released from prison, Wilde went to France and never returned to Great Britain or Ireland. He died in France from meningitis at age 46.
In 2017, Wilde was pardoned for homosexual acts that were no longer considered offenses.
