Enchanting Alberobello

Firstly, Enchanting Alberobello is Apulia’s number one trademark. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful little towns in Italy. Furthermore, it fascinates its visitors with its unique historical houses, called trulli, because they make you feel like another world. Now, let’s find out more about this great little town in the south of Italy.

What are trulli?

A trullo (plural, trulli) is a traditional Apulian dry stone hut with a conical roof. The construction style is specific to the Itria Valley of the Italian region of Apulia. Additionally, trullo was typically constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or permanent residences by small owners or farmworkers. The golden age of trulli was the nineteenth century, especially its final decades, marked by the development of wine growing.

What to see in Alberobello?

If you plan to visit the trulli of Alberobello, here is a small guide.

Although you can find trulli in the entire town, there are five specific places declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO:

  • With about a thousand cones, Rione Monti is the largest and most famous trulli district, located on the city’s southern side.
  • Rione Aia Piccola is smaller but exclusively residential (forbidden to open commercial activities), with about 400 cones at a short distance from the first.
  • Casa Pezzolla, a complex of 15 cones used as a Museum of the Territory,
  • Casa D’Amore, the first city hall, is linked to the official recognition of the city. The house museum of the Trullo Sovrano. The only two-story trullo in the town.

How to plan your stay in Alberobello?

  • Firstly, we recommend starting from the northern part. Here you will find an authentic, hidden neighborhood of trulli. In the center stands the first of the buildings declared a World Heritage Site, the so-called Trullo Sovrano.
  • Secondly, go shopping in the souvenir shops.
Most commercial activities for tourists in the city are in this district, where you can stroll and shop among the various souvenir shops and local craft shops. Additionally, this is a good chance for you to see the inside of the trulli because many traders will invite you to do so.
  • Thirdly, try some local food. And if you want to know more, please click here.
  • Fourthly, enjoy the countryside by bike.
  • And lastly, enjoy a night walk among the lighted domes of the trulli.

How to get to Alberobello?

The best way to get to the town is to fly to Bari airport and then take the direct bus from the Bari central station to Alberobello (ca an hour and five minutes).

Where and when to stay?

Firstly, as one of the major attractions in the region, Alberobello is by no means cheap. However, in the primary season, the prices skyrocket. We advise you to avoid the summer months (especially July and August) and public holidays in the spring (like Easter holidays or 1st May holidays). Otherwise, we advise you to visit the town in the spring or in September and October, when there are fewer crowds, the weather is still warm, and the prices are budget friendlier.

For those who don’t care about the prices, we suggest booking a room in one of the trulli house boutique hotels. But for those who want to feel the good authentic vibes, we recommend staying in the nearby less touristic villages.

Here is the list of the best value hotels/apartments in the area.

The conclusion of the Enchanting Alberobello post

While Alberobello is undoubtedly the village from another world, similar to those in the fantasy movies or fairytales, it can get a caricature during the peak season. Therefore, we suggest avoiding the hot summer months and the hours from noon till 5 pm. But despite all that, you should put it on your bucket list.
