In this article, we will provide a brief explanation of why June was chosen as Pride Month, including the reasons behind it and additional helpful information. If you’d like to learn more, please stay with us.
What is Gay Pride or LGBTQ+ Pride?
LGBTQ Pride Month celebrates the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities, combining elements of celebration and protest. Originating in major urban centers, Pride events aim to improve visibility, acceptance, and legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. While initially a political movement, many modern Pride events have transformed into celebrations of achievements and community. Depending on the location, these events continue to advocate for same-sex marriage recognition, anti-discrimination laws, and trans rights. Although challenges remain, significant progress has been made over the past 50 years, with major cities such as New York, São Paulo, and Madrid hosting Pride events that attract millions of people.
How did Pride Month start, and why is it in June?
LGBTQ Pride Month originated from the Stonewall riots, which began on June 28, 1969. The first Pride marches took place the following year on the same date to commemorate the riots, eventually evolving into a month-long celebration. The term “Pride Month” first appeared in the June 5, 1972, issue of the Delaware County Daily Times, where activist Byrna Aronson referred to “Gay Pride Week and Gay Pride Month.”
Pride Month, celebrated in June in the United States and worldwide, features parades, festivals, workshops, and parties, acknowledging the ongoing struggle for civil rights and the achievements of LGBTQ individuals. The organized fight for LGBTQ rights in the U.S. began as early as 1924, but the pivotal moment came during the Stonewall Inn raid in 1969, which sparked the modern LGBTQ rights movement. The riots, fueled by anger over police harassment, lasted for five days and marked a significant turning point in the quest for equal justice for the LGBTQ community.
Global and Regional LGBTQ+ Pride Organizations
Several non-profit organizations have emerged in the past couple of decades to support pride globally. InterPride, composed of dedicated volunteers, organizes pride events worldwide and is the creator and licensor of WorldPride, promoting LGBTQ+ issues through parades and festivals. The first WorldPride took place in Rome in 2000, and host cities were selected at InterPride’s annual meeting; previous hosts include Jerusalem, London, Toronto, and New York City. Washington, DC, will host WorldPride in 2025.
Regional groups, such as EuroPride and Pride of the Americas, also promote pride events. EuroPride licenses its event in a different European city each year, while Pride of the Americas connects events in North and South America with its inaugural event set for Fort Lauderdale.
Why Visit a Destination During a Local Pride Event?
Visiting a destination during a pride event is a fantastic way to explore the city, its landmarks, and its history while also immersing yourself in the local LGBTQ+ community. Many pride parades and events take place during the peak travel season, when the weather is typically perfect, making it an ideal time to plan your trip. Whether you’re traveling alone, with friends, or with family, attending a Pride event can be a fun and enjoyable way to experience a new place. IGLTA can help you find LGBTQ-friendly businesses in nearly any location, ensuring your trip is memorable, safe, and exciting.
